Training

South Columbia Search & Rescue (SCSAR) prides itself on the level of expertise, technical ability, and development of its members. All members are expected to train regularly to maintain and grow their skills.

Regular monthly team training occurs on the third Tuesday evening of every month. Monthly training may involve practicing a rescue scenario, learning a new skill, or familiarizing with local terrain. Specialty teams like the rope rescue and swiftwater rescue teams provide additional training and technical practice throughout the year.

All new members-in-training (MITs) are expected to complete the Ground Search & Rescue (GSAR) program within their first year of joining the team. The GSAR program provides the standardized foundation for all SAR members across British Columbia. MITs are probationary members of SCSAR until their training with the team is complete, and then they are expected to attend all regular trainings.

Commitment and Requirements

Being a member of SCSAR is rewarding, but it requires a long-term commitment of time and effort to maintain a high level of excellence.

All SCSAR members are expected to attend regular training and maintain their skills. Members-in-training (MITs) are expected to complete the GSAR training with the support of the SCSAR team within 1 year of joining.

All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, live in responding distance of SCSAR territory, pass a RCMP background check, provide a minimum commitment of 3 years, and attend regular trainings. Recruitment is typically annual, and based on the team's needs.

Join SCSAR

Applicants are invited to apply to join SCSAR at any time. Typically, applicants are contacted and interviewed to see if they are a suitable fit for the organization, and short-listed candidates are recruited to be members-in-training (MITs). After completing MIT training, the candidates become full members of SCSAR.
